History of the Raleigh Bicycle Company
The Raleigh Bicycle Company is one of the oldest in the entire world, originally based in Nottingham when it first began in 1887. Back in the 1920s and 30s, the company designed three-wheel cars and motorcycles called “Raleighettes” which eventually led to three-speed bicycles. These utility bicycles continue to be popular in the Netherlands.
By 1960, Raleigh had become the biggest worldwide bicycle manufacturers. They bought other British manufacturers, including Phillips Cycles, Hercules and Carlton Cycles. In the 1970s, the company manufactured one of the most popular children’s bikes. It was called the “Raleigh Chopper” bicycle and every child at the time begged their parents for one at Christmas time.
Today, Raleigh has factories in Denmark, Canada, China and Taiwan. Their Canadian factory in Quebec is the biggest large-scale bicycle manufacturer in all of North America.
