Pannier Bags

Pannier bags also commonly referred to as "Panniers" are the traditional and still the best  way of carrying a lot of weight on a bike. If you're shopping, touring and camping, there really isn't a viable alternative. Using a pannier rack and bag increased the amount of carrying capacity 5 fold over carrying stuff in a rucsac. Also panniers are an advantage over a rucsac as you can move freely on your bike without the hinderence of a rucsac.

It is recommend where possible to spread the load around the bag, hence the ideal soultion for touring would be a pair of large (50 litre or so) rear panniers (obviously you need to use a good quality rear rack) combined with a pair of smaller (20 litre or so) front pair.  The golden rule tho to touring is "try not to take too much stuff!"
